A Little About Scott Maxwell...

My mother says that I was the easiest to deal with out of all my siblings, although she doesn't remember saying it and flatly denies it, but deep down I know that it is true. I was not the cutest baby in the world but that isn't saying much because most babies are ugly. My wife has a real problem with me saying that and thinks that I will break her heart by thinking that our first born is ugly, but what can I say, she is one of the delusional who thinks she was cute when she was young.

I was born in Bloomington, Indiana in 1981 and grew up in Cary, North Carolina. I went to Apex High School where I ran cross country, track, more track, and sang in a really cool barbershop quartet. I lettered a total of 16 times (if academic letters really count for anything), earned various all-conference and all-region honors, and even finished second in the state in the 1000M my senior year. My favorite event turned out to be the 800; which is surprising considering I thought I was a miler until I looked back on my track "career" in college. I ended up running 1:58.2 for the 800 and 4:28.3 in the mile (I ran a 4:27 altitude equivalent my freshman year in college but that doesn't really count even though that is what I tell everyone my PR is). As I mentioned I ended up going to Brigham Young University in 2000 and ran for the 7th ranked Cougars. I had a pretty crappy college career that can't even be called that because I was a walk-on and never made the official roster. I ended up getting injured after thanksgiving and that about destroyed all my goals. In fact, the only goal that I managed to achieve was not to quit the team. I was only able to run a few miles a day for two months and I didn't really get better until I started popping Aleve (which turns out increases heat disease... great). I didn't become an Aleve addict, I just took an entire bottle at the maximum dosage until the pills ran out, and I might add that this solved my hip problem.

Freshman year wasn't a complete loss. I met Melanie Marie Mehr, the outrageously gorgeous woman who became my wife on May 7, 2004 in the Manti Utah LDS Temple. I also discovered a passion that I had known nothing about. It emerged violently during a particularly interesting Geology 101 class taught but an associate professor that mysteriously is unknown to any of the staff (or at least they don't remember her teaching here). Anyway, it was during some lecture that my desire to study Geology emerged like a... like whatever it emerged like... and I realized that I was going to look at rocks for the rest of my life. Of late, I have become interested in the more geophysical aspects of geology.

Of course I skipped over the two years that spent after my freshman year serving a two year mission for my church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) in Sao Paulo, Brazil. I preached the gospel and pretended not to think about Melanie who I was convinced would be married by the time I got home. I loved Brazil and the chance I had to do the Lord's work in bringing a few souls to Christ. When I got home Melanie was waiting and we got married and are now expecting our first child in June of 2005. I guess that about sums me up. wait, I forgot that I work for BYU's IT department. Okay, that about sums me up.
